Our chicken house is working really well. While we built enough room in the initial coupe and run for up to 20 chickens, it still seemed a bit crowded. We noticed a drop off in egg production from our hens and thought that it was probably related to the lack of sun exposure and frankly space to roam.
Unfortunately, where our property is at is very hostile to chickens. We have wild eagle, haws, owls, red foxes, coyotes and even brown bears all who like to eat chickens. So, the chickens need to be protected at all times.
I decided to add an “expanse” (named after the SiFi TV series) to address these issues. The expanse is made from 100% raw sawn wester red cedar. A couple of notable features are the “rounded roof” and the double door way that allows my wife to come in and out of the expanse without fear of chickens escaping.
